How to update firmware on AirPods and Beats devices

AirPods and Beats firmware updates include fixes, compatibility improvements, and sometimes new features. AirBuddy can show the installed and latest known firmware versions, but Apple devices install their firmware through Apple’s update process.

Check the firmware version in AirBuddy

Open the AirBuddy Dashboard, Control-click the headset, then choose the firmware command. You can also use AirBuddy’s Get Device Firmware Version and Get Latest Firmware Version actions in Shortcuts.

Update AirPods or AirPods Pro

1. Install the latest available version of iOS, iPadOS, or macOS on the paired device.
2. Make sure Bluetooth is on and the iPhone, iPad, or Mac is connected to Wi-Fi.
3. Connect AirPods to that device.
4. Connect the charging case to power, put AirPods in the case, and close the lid.
5. Keep the case in Bluetooth range for at least 30 minutes.
6. Open the lid, reconnect AirPods, then check the firmware version again.

Update AirPods Max

Connect AirPods Max to an up-to-date iPhone, iPad, or Mac that is connected to Wi-Fi. Connect AirPods Max to power and keep them in Bluetooth range for at least 30 minutes, then reconnect and check the version again.

Update Beats

On an Apple device, connect and charge Beats, then keep them in Bluetooth range for at least 30 minutes. For earbuds with a charging case, place both earbuds in the case and close the lid. On Android, supported models can be updated with the Beats app.
